Education

As part of our mission to support artistic innovation, scholarly research, and public programming related to the visual arts, the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation conducts various educational initiatives: internships at our New York-based offices, financial support for fellowships in fine art and art history, and innovative pilot programs that unfold at the intersection of higher education, museums, and community engagement. Using education as a vehicle for institutional growth and change within the field, we center new voices alongside familiar ones to support the next generation of artists, scholars, and professionals in the visual arts.

The Foundation's current educational initiatives include:

• Internships focused on Art History
• Fellowships and Program Support for Fine Arts, Art History, and Curatorial Studies
• A long-term partnership with Helen Frankenthaler’s Alma Mater Bennington College
• Frankenthaler Prints Initiative

Core Values

Inclusivity
The Foundation’s education initiatives foster an inclusive environment for learning and creative exchange. Our internships and support for educational programs cultivate diverse voices in the visual arts and arts education—and emphasize the vital role that art plays in societal wellbeing.

Access
Our programs provide meaningful opportunities for educational and professional development, research, publication, and community engagement. We serve students through internships by crafting one-on-one mentorship experiences grounded in collaborative learning and cultivate a culture of compassionate listening and transparent communication. Amplifying the voices of historically underrepresented individuals is a central component of Education’s activities. We recognize that pay equity is crucial to these efforts and provide competitive compensation to our interns.

Community
Education is invested in building a network of peers across arts and academic institutions. We value serving our community by cultivating a welcoming environment and enabling safe spaces for students and professionals to engage with each other and with Frankenthaler’s legacy and the visual arts.

Legacy
Education seeks to promote awareness of and engagement with Frankenthaler’s creative legacy through educational programming in alignment with the Foundation’s mission.
